Begin before the year ends

The most effective closure work happens in the final quarter, not after it. Reconciling balances and clearing open items ahead of time removes most of the pressure from the closure period itself.

Clear the open items list

Unreconciled bank entries, unmatched advances, long-outstanding receivables and suspense balances all take longer to resolve at year-end. Work through them while the context is still available.

Assemble supporting schedules

Fixed asset movement, depreciation, provisions, loans and related-party balances are all easier to prepare from records maintained through the year than reconstructed at the end.

Agree the timeline with everyone involved

Closure involves your team, your accountant and often your auditor. A shared timeline with dates for data, review and finalisation prevents the usual sequential waiting.
